영어 독해 및 SAT 등 시험에 고득점 받을 수 있는 리딩 기술 향상 방법
한국의 많은 고등학교 교사들은 “국어가 수능의 핵심이다.”라고 말합니다. 그 의미는 글을 많이 읽는 학생들은 미국 수능시험 격인 SAT, ACT 시험에서 역시 좋은 점수를 받습니다.
어떤 종류의 글이던 읽기는 항상 유용하지만 학부모님들이 10대 자녀들의 공부에 도움을 줄 방법을 원한다면 몇 가지의 Reading Materials를 추천해 드리겠습니다.
아래에서 이야기하는 Narrative Writing(단편소설이나 소설)을 제외하고 가장 최신의 글쓰기 스타일을 잡지와 신문에서 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 하지만 신문은 SAT 같은 시험 스타일 독해지문 구조를 반영하지 않는 방식이기 때문에 신문보다 잡지를 추천합니다.
잡지는 긍정적이거나 부정적인 비판적인 어조를 가지고 있어 신문 기사에서는 볼 수 없는 스타일입니다. 이런 부분은 모국어가 영어가 아닌 학생들에게 혼란을 주고 이런 스타일의 글을 많이 읽고 공부함으로써 지문 독해에 많은 도움을 받을 수 있습니다.
따라서 10대 자녀를 서점에 데려가 다양한 주제로 좋아하는 잡지를 구매해 주십시오. 타임스, 뉴스위크, 심지어 이코노미스트, 리더스 다이제스트도 최고지만(이코노미스트가 가장 어렵고 리더스 다이제스트가 가장 접근하기 쉬움) 정말 모든 잡지 읽기가 좋습니다.
소설 중에서 (대학 시험의 서사 구절의 경우) 현대 작가는 일반적으로 가장 현대적인 어휘와 문장 구조를 사용하여 가장 현대적인 방식으로 글을 쓰기 때문에 좋습니다.
SAT와 ACT도 거기에 19세기 내러티브 작문이 있어서 Henry James, Jane Austin, Louisa May Alcott, Jack London, Charlotte Bronte, Thomas Hardy, Emily Bronte, George Eliot, Hermann Hesse가 좋습니다. 현대 책 3~5권을 읽을 때마다 위 작가의 책 중 한 권을 읽기를 추천해 드립니다.
더 광범위한 목록을 원하는 경우 아래의 첫 번째 링크는 College Board의 101도서 읽기 목록에 대한 것이지만 현대의 10대에게는 다소 어렵고 흥미롭지 않을 수 있습니다.
더욱더 일반적인 "고전적인" 작품이지만 NPR(National Public Radio)의 두 번째 링크는 청소년에게 더 친숙합니다. 다시 말하지만, 거의 모든 독서는 좋은 독서이므로 다음 책을 찾는 좋은 하루 보내세요!

Improving Reading Comprehension and Test Taking Skills
In Korea, many high school teachers say that "Kug-eo (Korean) is the key to SuNeung (the National Scholastic Ability Test)." In the same way, good readers have always scored well on the American SAT and ACT tests. Reading almost anything is always good, of course, but for those parents wanting to help their students get the most direct help for their teenagers' reading, here are some suggested reading materials.
Except the narrative writing (short story) passage which is talked about below, the most current writing style is seen in magazines and newspapers. I suggest magazines instead of newspapers though, since newspapers are structured in a way that don't reflect the way most SAT and ACT reading passages are written. Magazine writing also often has a positive or negative, critical tone, which won't be found as much in newspaper articles. This positive or negative tone, in particular, is what confuses many students, especially those whose first language isn't English. So, take your teenager to a local book store and give them some cash to buy a small stack of their favorite magazines in their choice of diverse topics. Time, Newsweek, even The Economist, Readers Digest are the best (The Economist the most difficult, and Readers Digest the most approachable), but really, any and all magazine reading is good. Among novels (for those narrative passages in the college tests), contemporary writers are good because they usually write in the most modern way using the most modern vocabulary and sentence structures.
The SAT and ACT do have 19th century narrative writing there too, so Henry James, Jane Austin, Louisa May Alcott, Jack London, Charlotte Bronte, Thomas Hardy, Emily Brontë, George Eliot, Hermann Hesse are good. I'd read one of the above author's books for every three to five modern books to read.
If you want a more expansive list, the first link below is for College Board's 101 book reading list, but they can be a bit difficult and not very exciting to today's teenagers. They are the more typically "classic" works, but the second list by NPR (National Public Radio) is more teen-friendly. Again, almost any reading is good reading, so happy hunting for your next book!
