실내장식학 전공에서는 규모, 배열, 장식, 조명, 음향, 온도, 질감, 색깔, 원료등 건축 구조물 환경에서 있을수 있는 모든 측면을 공부하며,  인간의 필요에 합당하고 만족을 주는 환경 개발을 하는 일에 전문적인 사명을 감당할 수 있도록 훈련을 쌓는다.

* 전공의 특성:

  실내장식 분야는 최근에 들어 근본적인 변화를 맞이하고 있다. 실내장식가들은 과거와 달리 다양한 부분에서 활약하므로 학부에서의 교육 과정도 이에 따른 다양성을 채택하고 있으며 머지않아 전문건축사 처럼 면허있는 실내 장식가로서의 전문가적인 면모를 갖추는 일이 꾸준하게 진행되고 있다.

  

   처음에는 가구나 주어진 공간에서 장식적인 측면에서의 디자인 공부에 한정되기도 하였지만, 이제는 건축설계적인 측면에서 공부하며 공간디자인과 환경을 통제하는 분야까지 학업이 이루어 지고 있다. 그래서 모든 건축 구조물의 규모, 배열, 장식, 조명, 음향, 온도, 질감, 색깔등이 사용자들에 미치는 영향들을 바르게 분석함으로서 창조적이고 가장 합당한 실내공간을 창출해내는 영역을 훈련받게 된다.



   실내디자이너들은 개개인 실수요자들에게 미치는 물리적, 지적, 정서적인 영향력뿐만 아니라 사회적, 윤리적, 경제적, 정치적 관점을 고려하여 소비자들에게 최대한의 만족을 주는 일을 행한다.

건축설계회사의 실내디자이너나 실내장식을 전문으로 하는 기업, 섬유나 가구 디자인 회사에서 종사한다. 또한 창문, 현관문, 목욕탕, 조명기구 제작회사에서도 많이 필요로 하는 직종이다. 졸업생들은 또한 실내장식에 관련된 언론 분야에서도 활약한다. 대학원 과정의 공부를 통해 건축사나 환경건축사로 진출하기도 한다.
